Sandals

Vocabulary / Shoes / Sandals

All sandals are an open type of shoes with straps going over and around the foot. Some have straps at the heel, some don’t.

Fisherman – A sandal with a cage of straps around the foot. Typically a lot more straps than gladiator sandals, and another a strap around the heel.

Flat Sandals – Sandals with a flat sole. No heel or very very minimal heel of about 0.5 inches (1 cm).

Flip Flops – Flat soled sandals with one elevated strap to be placed between your big toe. Very light and easily washable, meant for sandy beaches. Usually a cheap plasticy foam material.

Gladiator – A sandal with a cage of straps around the foot, and another a strap around the heel. Usually made of leather. Sometimes the straps go up the ankle/calf as well.

Jelly – Sandals made of PVC plastic. Usually quite squishy and with a shiny gloss to them.

Mule – A sandal with an open vamp and leaves an opening in the back to slide in your foot. Similar to slides but are not similar to flip flops as they typically have a raised heel.

Platforms – Shoes with an elevated sole. Can vary in height but usually around an inch or two.

Slides – Shoes with an enclosed vamp but open toes. Forms a bridge across the top of your foot, usually somewhat thick. Might be included in the flip flops categories when shopping.

Strappy – A sandal with straps all over it. An excessive amount of straps most of the time.

Wedges – Sandals with an elevated heel but no empty space between the heel and sole as it’s filled in like a wedge.
