Flats

Vocabulary / Shoes / Flats

Most cis women do not have flat feet so you might often have a tiny heel on the shoe to support the arched feet most women tend to have. If you have flatter feet, flats are good for your feet.

Ballet / Ballerina – Narrow and flat soled shoes with an open view to the top of your foot. Usually just called ‘flats’. Not much padding in the sole, therefore you might see another category of flats called ‘comfort’ which just have more padding on the sole or replaceable inserts.

Espadrilles – Espadrilles are defined best by the material of their sole, being esparto rope or jute. They are typically flat but can come in other shapes.

Loafers  – Slip on shoes typically made of leather and a flat or very low heel. A business casual look.

Mary Jane flats – Flats with a strap going overtop your foot right where you ankle starts, usually quite thin.

Mules – A shoe with an enclosed vamp (covers your foot) and with a raised edge surrounding your foot but leaves an opening in the back to slide in your foot.

Oxfords – Similar to loafers but with a pointed toe, laces and a tongue.
