Booties – Ankle boots that have a low to medium heel height. Usually doesn’t go an inch past the ankle as the shaft of the boot tends to be shorter.

Chelsea boots – Boots that are snug at the ankle with a low heel and an elastic side panel. Mostly made of leather. They also will typically have pull tabs at the back and sometimes front.

Combat boots – Military style boots that go well past the ankle, with a flat sole or low heel to provide stability to your foot. Usually leather or canvas.

Duck boots – A waterproof boot with a webbed rubber vamp (the part covering the top of your foot). The shaft isn’t always waterproof but lets you not worry about puddles. Good for hikes.

Flat boots – Boots without any height in the heel so the sole is completely flat or less than 1 inch (~2cm). Completely flat boots can be slippery.

High heel Boots – Boots with a heel usually 2.5+inches in height (6cm). The reason boot heels are lower for qualifying as ‘high heel’ boots is because their shaft height is much higher.

Knee high boots – Boots that go up to your knee in height, know the length as if you are taller they may only go mid calf.

Over the knee – Boots that go over your knee in height. They often have stretchable material for the portion going over your knee, or a draw string.

Riding boots – Boots with a calf length shaft meant to ride either horses or motorcycles. Almost exclusively made of leather and possible a fabric backing to the calf so it can slip on easier.

Sock boots – Boots that hug your ankle with an elasticized material to look like a sock.

Western Boots – Leather or suede boots with a high shaft and varying heel height (usually low or medium heel). The shaft has intricate patterns in a cowboy like style, hence the ‘western’ name, the vamp also might have perforations to create another pattern.
