Earrings

Vocabulary / Jewelry / Earrings

Band – Similar to huggie earrings, they are a single flat band hoop, the main difference is that band earrings are thin most of the time and don’t have any ornamental designs,. It resembles a ring.

Beaded – Earrings with beads. Can be made of any material such as resin, plastic or stones.

Chain – Earrings with the main feature being dangling chains. Can be any sized link. Fit anywhere on ear, eg: helix to lobe.

Chandelier – Ornate earrings with intricate designs that resemble chandeliers, subset of drop earring as they dangle off the ear with multiple strands embedded with rhinestones.

Charms – Includes anything with a kind of charm for the earring such as a flower or other designs/objects. Very broad group. Typically a hoop with the charm dangling off the bottom.

Clip on – Earrings that do not require pierced ears as the clip onto your lobe. Great for people who cannot pierce their ears because of a risk of keloids or other reasons.

Crawler– Earrings that crawl up your ear in design. Lay flat against your skin. Usually a post backing but can be cuffed.

Cuffs – Earrings that fit on the outside of your ear, usually along the middle or top. Often look like huggies since they sit snugly on the cuff of your ear but without having a backing so they can be used without having pierced ears. Especially useful for cartilage areas.

Dangle / Drop – Earrings with a wire that has a gem or other feature that hangs off.

Ear jacket – A type of stud earring with an additional part that wraps around the back of the ear, showing another piece in front. Acting like 2 earrings through one piercing.

Hoops – A hoop. Can vary in size through diameter and thickness. Variety of closure types. Sometimes the back is open, like a crescent.

Huggie – A tiny hoop that hugs your ear because of its small size.

Long strand – Similar to their name they consist of a long piece, usually a chain or something like it that dangles.  Difference between drop earrings is these are usually much longer.

Multi strand – A type of (usually) drop earrings that have multiple strands hanging off. Can be beads or gem encrusted metal, etc.

Solitaire – Consists of a single large gemstone in a stud like fashion. Often worn alone as statement pieces.

Studs – Small earrings with a pole back. Usually gems or spheres of a certain material but can also be charms. They remain fixed to where they are inserted. Easy to wear and pair as a beginner since they are uncomplicated.

Tassels – Similar to multi strand but usually made of cloth fabric and with many many many strands. Almost looks like the head of a mop or broom.

Tennis – Symmetrical earrings consisting of fine metals and real gemstones in pattern.
