Many of the hats on this list are associated more with men’s-wear rather than women’s-wear so keep that in mind! This is just a more exhaustive list of all hats.

Baseball Cap – A baseball cap (or hat) is a rounded hat with 6 triangular pieces for the crown. Often with 6 eyelets (holes) and a button at the top. The front facing brim of a classic baseball cap is rounded.
Beanie – A knit hat with a brim that is flipped upwards. Typically shorter in overall length than a Toque. Frequently embroidered with different designs or logos on the upturned brim.
Beret – A circular hat made of a felt material and a tassel at the center of the crown. The material often flops to one side to create an asymmetrical appearance.
Boater – A circular straw hat with a flat crown and brim. A circular ribbon wrapped around the crown usually has a stripe and bow.
Bobble hat – A knitted for fitting hat with a pompom at the center of the crown. Often made of a thicker material than beanies or toques. Frequently crocheted as well. Also called a Toque in some places.
Bonnet – A Bonnet hat is a type of old fashion hat with a massive upturned and shell like brim. Straps come down from the side to tie the hat in place. The back of the hat is usually a softer material that provides it the puffy look.
Bowler – A dome like hat that has a rounded crown and upturned feature on the sides of the brim. Made of a felt material, it should be relatively firm and not flexible.
Breton – A sun hat with an upturned circular brim and rounded crown, usually with an exaggerated height. Can be made of a variety of materials but traditionally straw.
Bucket hat – A hat typically made of a heavy duty fabric like tweed or denim, it features a downturned circular brim. They are often worn in wetter environments as the brim repels water away.
Cartwheel– A hat with an extremely wide brim and shallow crown. They are typically designed to be worn at a slanted angle.
Cloche – A bell shaped hat worn tight on the head. Usually made of a flexible fabric. Has a slight brim if at all.
Cowboy hat / Western hat – A hat with a taller crown that has indentations on each side. The brim is wide and often upturned on the side. Almost all will feature a decorative band around the base of the crown. Most frequently made of felt or straw, sometimes leather.
Deerstalker – The ‘Sherlock Holmes Hat’ is a hat made of 6 triangular shapes of fabric that often features a traditional pattern like plaid. It has a rounded brim on the front and back of the hat. The crown is rounded and usually has a bow on its top.
Fascinator – A hat characterized by the large bow or flowers. They are of varying shapes and sizes but typically worn off to the side of one’s head and that attaches with either a clip or headband. Does not feature the typical hat shape as it rarely covers the whole head
Fedora – Modernly known as the ‘Redditor hat’, a fedora was originally worn by women, and adapted as a symbol for women’s rights activists. It features a pinched crown, and varying sized brim. There are lots of varieties in fedora, but most have a flatter, medium length circular brim and a base ribbon around the crown.
Flat Cap – A type of baseball cap with a wider and flatter front brim. Sometimes called a snapback, as rather than a fabric adjuster, they will use plastic snaps.
Floppy Hat – A hat with a large and floppy brim that looks wavy. Not to be confused with a bucket hat as some countries use the terms interchangeably.
Headscarf – A scarf that is meant to cover the head. Sometimes it is meant to cover the entire head, leaving only the face exposed.
Homburg – A hat with a single dented crown and a ribbon at the base of the crown. The brim is slightly upturned in the front, with more of an upturn along the sides.
Jockey cap – A hat made of 4 panels and an elongated flat front brim. The rounded cap will occasionally feature a pair of strapped goggles/glasses for horse riding.
Panama – A hat that originates in Ecuador, it is a white straw hat with a pinched and recessed crown with a minorly upturned medium length brim. There is a ribbon with a flat bow around the base of the crown, typically black or sometimes brown.
Picture hat – A very large and ornate hat that has a wide brim. Name originates from how the giant brim can create a ‘picture frame’ effect around someone’s face.
Pillbox – A pillbox hat is a round hat that has no brim. The crown is short and flat, or with an indentation that takes the shape of the wearer’s head. Sometimes features a netted veil.
Porkpie – A hat with an oval shaped, short crown that has a flat top. The brim is either flat or upturned, and usually features a ribbon at the base of the crown.
Russian trapper / Ushanka – A hat with a fur-like inside with flaps to cover the ears. These flaps can be tied up at the crown, giving it a bulkier appearance.
Safari hat – Often confused with a ‘Pith’, A safari hat bears more resemblance to a cowboy hat. It differentiates itself with a higher crown, and downward facing brim. Usually made of canvas or leather. Often has an adjustable chinstrap.
Straw hat – A hat made of straw. Comes in many shapes but usually a domed crown and wide flat brim.
Sun visor – A visor that protects against the sun. There is just a band and ‘brim’ to keep the sun out of your eyes, no crown. Good for people who still want to show off their hair as an alternative to sunglasses as the strap is more secure, especially for sports.
Tam – A loose crocheted hat that is lopsided towards the back. The bulkier part is meant to be worn on the back of the head. Like a hybrid between a beanie and beret.
Trilby – A hat similar to a fedora, but with a shorter brim. The indentation of the crown is usually deeper and taller than a fedora.
