Skirts

Vocabulary / Skirts

A line – Skirts with a more fitted waist that flare out towards the bottom. Giving them the appearance of a capital A.

Asymmetrical – Skirts that do not have a uniform and regular shape. Usually just means one side is longer than the other.

Bodycon – Really tight skirts intended to show off the contour of your body shape.

Buttonet – Skirts with buttons going down the front, usually a straight line down the center but can be a different arrangement. Typically midi in length. Also called a button up skirt sometimes.

Circle – Skirts cut from a circular shape of fabric which allows them to hold their circular shape when worn. There are 4 types based on how much of a full circle they make up, pictured from full to 1/4 circle.

High low – Skirts that appear shorter in length in the front than they do in the back, showing off the front of your legs while hiding the back.

Maxi – Skirts that go well past the calf in length, sometimes to the floor but usually at your ankle. If you are taller though, they may be more like midi skirts when you wear them (check their length measurement!).

Midi – Skirts that go to or past the knee in length. Comes in many styles. Sometimes ‘knee-length’ skirts are included.

Mini – Short skirts that are above the knee in length (but usually very short)

Pencil – A tight fitting skirt that goes about to your knee in length. Also somewhat annoying to walk in if it goes past the knee. Similar to bodycon.

Pleated – Skirts with pleats. Pleats being ‘folds’ in the fabric

Slip – Skirts that are made of a light fabric like satin. Often loose and flowy skirts.

Slit – Skirts that have a slit in the cut. This allows for easier movement of your legs if it’s tight, or simply to show off your skin.

Straight – Skirts that have a narrow, straight down silhouette, similar to pencil but not contoured to the body. Its shape comes from how the fabric is cut. Sometimes called a ‘column skirt’ when it’s longer in length.

Tiered – Skirts with multiple layers to the fabric, or just designed that break up the skirt into ‘levels’ through horizontal breaks in the fabric.

Wrap – Skirts that have fabric wrap around itself, often using a waist tie for closure (which usually accompanies a slit to show off your leg). Sometimes they wrap over themselves to create a layered appearance.
