Tips for Transfem people to learn about clothing and style

Bags

Vocabulary / Bags

Backpacks – Bags with 2 (or sometimes 1) strap with the bag resting on your back. Varies in sizes.

Bucket Bags – Bags in the shape of a bucket, usually come with a strap or handle on the top. Sometimes uses a string and rivets that tighten to close the bag rather than a lid or zipper.

Clutches – Small bags designed to be held in your hand (Sometimes comes with a wrist strap)

Crossbody Bags – Bags with straps that go on one shoulder and across your body

Evening Bags – Smaller bags that are a bit fancier looking than normal, meant to carry essentials in the evening at a party (such as makeup and your phone, not much room for anything else).

Handle Bags / Purse – Bags intended to be held only by their handle in your hand or on the forearm, not a strap. This is the traditional meaning of purse, other bags would be called ‘handbags’.

Hobos – Shoulder bags with a sag or indent in its shape in the middle. Typically worn on the shoulder or forearm, but comes with crossbody strap occasionally.

Messenger – Crossbody bags with one giant compartment and a flap to close the top, big enough for laptops and documents.

Mini Bags – Tiny bags, usually mini versions of larger ones in the same style. Typically doesn’t include clutches because of their look.

Satchel / Top handle – Bags with top handles and one giant compartment. They often come with a crossbody strap. Most versatile as they can be worn anywhere provided the handles are long enough.

Shoulder Bags – Bags meant to be worn with the handle or strap resting on the shoulder on one side. Not crossbody.

Totes – Bags with a open compartment and handles to hold or be worn on the forearm (or shoulder if it fits). Generally large bags.
